As a small business owner, Iā€™m continually stunned by the level of ignorance surrounding the issue of a mandatory minimum wage. For example, an Iowa congressional candidate just suggested that we need to have a $17.00 per hour minimum wage so that women can ā€œmake ends meet.ā€ SEVENTEEN DOLLARS PER HOUR. And this silly contention is made with no regard to whether a business can afford it, the effect it will have on prices or employment, and lastly, whether the employeeā€™s productivity is worth anywhere near that. Forgive me, but it is not my job to provide employment so that women can make ends meet. My job is to make a profit, and the marketplace determines what I can pay my employees and what I can charge for their services.
