As a small business owner, I’m continually stunned by the level of ignorance surrounding the issue of a mandatory minimum wage. For example, an Iowa congressional candidate just suggested that we need to have a $17.00 per hour minimum wage so that women can “make ends meet.” SEVENTEEN DOLLARS PER HOUR. And this silly contention is made with no regard to whether a business can afford it, the effect it will have on prices or employment, and lastly, whether the employee’s productivity is worth anywhere near that. Forgive me, but it is not my job to provide employment so that women can make ends meet. My job is to make a profit, and the marketplace determines what I can pay my employees and what I can charge for their services.
