(Des Moines, IA) State Senator Randy Feenstra (R-Hull) said Monday it is extremely disappointing Senate Democrats continue to fail Iowa farmers and small business owners by not coupling with Section 179 federal tax depreciation changes. However, it is even more deplorable they choose to criticize two important drivers of Iowa’s economy, small business owners and farmers, Senator Feenstra said.

State Senator Robb Hogg (D-Cedar Rapids) was very critical of small business owners and farmers who have contacted their legislators urging their support on coupling with federal tax changes which encourage growth in Iowa’s economy. Even worse, Senator Hogg shifted the blame from the inaction of Senate Democrats to Congress.

“I understand there are a lot of big crocodile tears being shed over this issue,” Hogg said. “Congress is to blame.”

“Those investment decisions have been made and maybe people had this belief that it might or would happen, but that doesn’t justify their claim that they were counting on it.”

Failing to act on this bill affects nearly every small business and farmer in the state, Feenstra said.

“Senate Democrats failing to move this bill will create significant hardships for many Iowans who anticipated we would pass the coupling legislation like we have in past years,” Feenstra added. “This is not an entitlement they are owed as Senator Hogg said on the Senate floor Monday. This is their hard-earned money they invested into their farm or business.”

Shane Vander Hart: While in principle, it is moral and just for the government to execute those convicted of heinous crimes, there are plenty of good reasons why Iowa should not reinstitute the death penalty after 52 years.
