The package bomb suspect accused of sending pipe bombs to various Democrat officials and activists is now in custody in Florida. Ceasar Sayoc, age 56, has been charged with five different federal crimes and faces up to 48 years in prison.

I am glad a suspect has been taken into custody, and if found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt he deserves the maximum penalty available.

He is also an outspoken Trump supporter.

That said, the only person responsible for sending the bombs is, if guilty, Ceasar Sayoc.

Has President Trump said inflammatory things while campaigning and at rallies? Yes. Has he called for violence against Democratic opponents? No.

He is no more responsible than U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) is of the shooting at the Republican practice before the Congressional Baseball game last year.

Crazy, sinful people do crazy and sinful things. Sayoc has an extensive rap sheet going back to 1991 and even made a bomb threat in 2002.

Certainly, President Trump is not responsible for that.

Does overheated rhetoric from the right and the left help to set off guys like this? It doesn’t help and I have called for a return to a civil public square, but, as I said, guys like these were getting into trouble far before 2016.

Everybody’s hot take on this subject was probably wrong.
