I hope that U.S. Senator Mazie Hirono (D-HI) continues to be so outspoken. Before the Kavanaugh hearings, I didn’t know that much about her and since she has been an absolute treasure.

A treasure for conservatives that is.

Hirono during an interview with Dahlia Lithwick, senior editor of Slate, at the Bend Towards Justice in Washington, DC on Tuesday explained why Democrats have difficulty connect with their voters on important issues.

Watch, it is priceless.

“One of the things that we Democrats have a really hard time is connecting to people’s hearts instead of here (gesturing to head). We’re good at shoveling out all of the information that touch people here (pointing to head), but not here (gesturing toward her heart),” Hirono said explaining how Democrats can better address civil rights issues.

“And I have been saying in all of our Senate Democratic retreats that we need to speak to the heart, not in a manipulative way, not in a way that brings forth everybody’s fears and resentments, but truly to speak to the hearts, so that people know that we’re actually on their side,” Hirono added.

“We have a really hard time doing that, and one of the reasons that was shown to me at one of our retreats was that we Democrats know so much, that is true, we have to tell everybody how smart we are, and so we have a tendency to be very left-brain and we think of this really? That is not how people make decisions,” she concluded.

Yes, she said that. Democrats need to appeal to people’s hearts because appealing to their heads does not help them connect. Apparently, she believes, Democrats are too cerebral for the average voter.

When it comes to political messaging the right approach is connecting to a voter’s head and heart.

That said, I can’t say I’ve seen much in the way of cerebral arguments from Democrats over the last election cycle. The left tends to emote more than it reasons. Which, in that case, Hirono is probably right that to connect to her base they need to present an emotional argument. That said, Hirono just insulted her base and voters Democrats hope to attract, and she’s likely unaware of doing so.
