WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, chairman of the Senate Agriculture Subcommittee on Rural Development and Energy, spoke Tuesday on the importance of passing the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). Ernst noted it has been 242 days since President Trump and leaders from Mexico and Canada signed the agreement, and that members of Speaker Pelosi’s own Democratic caucus have urged her to continue trade negotiations with the Trump Administration.

Read her remarks below:

It has been 242 days since the United States, Mexico, and Canada signed the USMCA trade agreement. It is vitally important for our small businesses, our farmers, our ranchers, across the small business owners, across the state, and across the United States that we get this done.

Just last Friday, 14 Democratic members of Nancy Pelosi’s caucus signed a letter and sent it to her stating that it was imperative that we get this deal done asking her to bring it up in short order.

So I hope that she takes this in-state work period to look at that letter, take the time to evaluate it. I do feel that if she brought it up today in the House it would pass. I know that it would pass here in the United States Senate.

So again just for our farmers, ranchers, small business owners, for everyone involved in trade and that part of that economy we really need to get this done. I want to give high kudos to our President and the trade rep for their great work on this deal. It is a solid deal, folks just want to see it done.

So again, I hope we are able to bring this up in short order and get it over the finish line.
