DES MOINES, Iowa – On Monday, the State Judicial Nominating Commission submitted three nominees to Governor Kim Reynolds to select an appointee from to replace Judge Gayle Vogel who retired from the Iowa Court of Appeals on July 1, 2019.
Sixteen Iowans applied for the vacancy, and the commission made their decision after interviewing the candidates on Monday.
They selected Tim Gartin, Myron Goodkin, and Julie Schumacher as nominees for the Governor to consider. Reynolds has 30 days from when the nominees’ names are forwarded to her to decide who she will appoint.
Tim Gartin
Tim Gartin, 52, is an attorney with Hastings, Gartin & Boettger, LLP in Ames. He has practiced law for 23 years. Gartin has served on the Ames City Council since 2014. In 2010, he ran for Iowa Senate District 23 as a Republican.
Gartin received his B.A. from Iowa Wesleyan College, an M.A. from Iowa State University, and a J.D. from Northern Illinois University College of Law.
He currently is a lecturer on business law at Iowa State University. Gartin is a member of the Federalist Society and is a member of Cornerstone Church in Ames.

Myron Goodkin
Myron Goodkin, 61, is an Iowa District Court judge who resides in Fairfield and serves Judicial District 8A in Jefferson County. He was appointed to the bench in 2011 by former Governor Terry Branstad.
Prior to his appointment, he served as an attorney for 28 years with Foss, Kuiken, Gookin & Cochran, P.C. Goodkin also served on the Fairfield City Council for over 13 years including time as Mayor Pro Tem.
He earned his B.S. from Iowa State University and his J.D. from Drake University School of Law.
Goodkin is a member of the First United Methodist Church of Fairfield. He also served as an attorney for the Iowa Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church from 2004-2011 as part of his private practice.

Julie Schumacher
Julie Schumacher, 52, resides in Schleswig and serves as an Iowa District Court judge serving the Third Judicial District in Crawford County. Schumacher was appointed to the bench in 2012 by former Governor Terry Branstad as a District Associate Judge in Sioux City; he later appointed her current role in 2017.
Before serving on the bench, she spent over 17 years in private practice as an attorney with the Mundt, Franck & Schumacher Law Firm in Denison.
Schumacher earned her B.A. from the University of South Dakota and her J.D. from Creighton University School of Law.
She served as an Assistant City Attorney for the City of Denison for approximately 18 years and also served as a part-time prosecutor in Crawford County for over four years.
Schumacher is a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Schleswig.
