DES MOINES, Iowa – On Thursday, Gov. Kim Reynolds announced her appointment of District Court Judge Julie Schumacher to the Iowa Court of Appeals. Schumacher will replace Judge Gayle Vogel who retired from the Iowa Court of Appeals on July 1, 2019.

The Iowa Court of Appeals is Iowa’s intermediate appellate court. It is composed of nine judges and decides appeals from district courts across Iowa.

Julie Schumacher, 52, resides in Schleswig and serves as an Iowa District Court judge serving the Third Judicial District in Crawford County. Schumacher was appointed to the bench in 2012 by former Governor Terry Branstad as a District Associate Judge in Sioux City; he later appointed her as district court judge in 2017.

Before serving on the bench, she spent over 17 years in private practice as an attorney with the Mundt, Franck & Schumacher Law Firm in Denison.

Schumacher earned her B.A. from the University of South Dakota and her J.D. from Creighton University School of Law.

She served as an Assistant City Attorney for the City of Denison for approximately 18 years and also served as a part-time prosecutor in Crawford County for over four years.
