Kelvey shared some good news a couple of weeks ago, and that sparked an idea, why not do this every week? So I would like to introduce Friday Five where I’ll scour the internet to share some good news from the week.

1. “Hero Shopping Hours” at Sam’s Club for Healthcare Workers Regardless of Membership

Sam’s Club announced on Twitter this week that they would open their store to first responders and health care workers starting on April 19th. Healthcare workers will be allowed to shop from 8:00 am – 10:00 am on Sunday mornings, a time generally reserved for Sam’s Club employees, and they can shop there even if they do not have a membership.

2. WWII Vet Gets Socially Distant Salute on 101st Birthday

Rockland/Westchester Journal News reports that cars in Pearl River, N.Y. lined up outside a World War II vet Alan Cameron’s home to help him celebrate his 101st birthday.

On Monday, vehicles paraded by to wish Cameron well. His actual birthday was Sunday.

“He and all of us were surprised,” his daughter, Debbie David, said. “We thought, ‘Where are all of these cars coming from?”

Orangetown police helped to organize the procession; Pearl River Fire Department and neighbors participated.

3. Mom Brightens Neighbors’ Day Through Sidewalk Art

Casey Drake, a former science teacher and mother of two from Winter Park, Fla., uses her kids’ sidewalk chalk to draw cartoons of Disney characters coping with social distancing. 

That is an interesting use of time while being stuck at home, why not? 

4. Stepping Up to Help Foster Families 

A Christian men’s group in Tampa, Fla. is stepping up to help foster families in their community. Man Up Tampa Bay has picked-up and delivered chicken tenders for more than 220 foster families.

“We just think that Jesus wants us to act and not just talk,” Jeff Ford told Fox 13 Tampa Bay. “So that’s what we are doing out here in the community. We’re acting on behalf of the kids. We’re acting on behalf of the foster parents.”

5. Fire Department Honors Grocery Store Workers

The firemen of Clark County Fire District 6 near Vancouver, Wash. decided to honor local grocery store workers this week.

They wrote on Facebook, “Firefighters and paramedics are often called heroes. Well, in our minds the real heroes are the folks who leave the safety of their homes to keep our grocery stores open. Tonight we decided to say thank you in person to employees at the Salmon Creek Fred Meyer Store.”
