From the Roberts campaign:

Republican gubernatorial candidate State Representative Rod Roberts is applauding Governor Chet Culver for signing a gun-rights bill into law today which Roberts advocated and voted for during the most recent session of the Iowa Legislature. The law makes the State of Iowa a “shall issue” state, which empowers Iowans to exercise their Second Amendment rights by relaxing restrictions on the ability to carry a concealed weapon. Iowa joins 37 other states that have “shall issue” laws.

“I’m pleased Governor Culver has signed the bill to make Iowa a ‘shall issue’ state. I advocated and voted for the bill during the most recent session of the Iowa Legislature because I believe in the importance of Second Amendment rights, and I believe state regulations should empower—not hinder—the exercise of Second Amendment rights,” said Roberts, a ten-year State Representative from Carroll.

Roberts pledges to advocate for more gun-rights legislation as Governor. One of his first priorities is to amend the Iowa Constitution to make sure it provides a protection similar to the Second Amendment protection guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution.

“As a gun owner, I understand gun rights are about freedom and liberty. Our Founding Fathers intended Americans to be able to exercise the right to bear arms. I have fought for this right as a State Representative, and I will continue to fight for this right as Governor,” said Roberts, who has served as the senior member of the Republican leadership team in the Iowa House.
