image Silly me I thought NASA’s mission was to go into space, but I’m completely wrong.  It is to form better relations with Muslims.

Fox News reports:

NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said in a recent interview that his "foremost" mission as the head of America’s space exploration agency is to improve relations with the Muslim world.

Though international diplomacy would seem well outside NASA’s orbit, Bolden said in an interview with Al Jazeera that strengthening those ties was among the top tasks President Obama assigned him. He said better interaction with the Muslim world would ultimately advance space travel.

"When I became the NASA administrator — or before I became the NASA administrator — he charged me with three things. One was he wanted me to help re-inspire children to want to get into science and math, he wanted me to expand our international relationships, and third, and perhaps foremost, he wanted me to find a way to reach out to the Muslim world and engage much more with dominantly Muslim nations to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science … and math and engineering," Bolden said in the interview.

I would have thought the NASA Administrator’s chief goal would be to find a new vehicle for us to go into space since we’re retiring the Space Shuttle.  I guess we are ok with paying the Russians to give us rides.  Maybe, I don’t know even think about going to the Moon again, Mars perhaps.  Here’s a wild thought perhaps work with the private sector to get them involved as if this is something only government can do (I’m not going to hold my breath).

NASA wasn’t created to be an international diplomacy vehicle, it wasn’t created to increase the number of kids involved in science or math, and it certainly wasn’t created so that Muslim countries would feel good about themselves.

This shouldn’t even be on the radar.  Hope and change people, hope and change.
