A Wal-Mart employee getting trampled to death in New York (HT: Leslie Carbone)  and two getting shot at a Toys R Us in California proves the doctrine of the depravity of man.  I can’t stand Black Friday as it is.  It certainly brings out the worst in people.  This reminds me of a couple of verses in James:

What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you?  You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask,(James 4:1-2, ESV).

Man, if there was any way Christians could make a statement to the culture, it would be by living responsibly, humbly and frugally.

    I’m with you, Shane.

Unfortunately, we are too often just as materialistic and consumerist as our pagan neighbors.

I like your tack on the depravity of man. Lots of people try to deny it and assert that we are essentially good, but I would simply direct them to the headlines on any given day.

  2. You are right that would make the ultimate statement.

Brilliant reference, brother. Even the Body of Christ needs to shop and find the bargains, but at the overhyped, uber-commercialism of a day as sacred as this?! No thanks!

Such a tragedy, such a waste of lives given by God.

Whenever we think we are God’s chosen as a nation, let us remember behavior like this and ask ourselves do we really believe that.
