Andy tagged me on his blog for this meme.  I’m supposed to list seven random or weird facts about myself and then tag seven other people.  I think I’ve done this meme or one similar, and since I haven’t done a meme in awhile here goes:

  1. I have eaten wild alligator soup when I was in New Orleans for the MentorYouth.com conference in New Orleans.  It was very good, and I was glad I took “the risk.”
  2. I have never been overseas, the only times I’ve been out of the U.S. were on mission trips – twice to Mexican border towns (Nuevo Laredo and Reynosa), and once to Toronto (and go figure the week we were there, they had a heat wave).
  3. I have been fired from a church.
  4. I separated my shoulder wrestling my freshman year in high school.
  5. I considered walking on Drake University’s wrestling team (back when they had one) until I got the snot beat out of me by a guy from Indiana University-Bloomington’s team in an open tournament.  That was a good reality check to help me realize I wasn’t college wrestling material.
  6. I am an identical twin.  No we don’t look that much alike now (I am obviously the better looking twin).  Yes we did when we were younger, and yes we did switch places on occasion to mess people up.
  7. When I was at Drake University (I attended there for two years) they placed a Mac in every dorm room.  E-mail (not what it was called then) just was coming on the scene and I never used it, I thought “why would I need this?”  My how times have changed.

I’m tagging – Marshall, Angela, Kevin, Melody, Cameron, Jeff, and Angel.

This will force me to create a new category “memes” on my blog. I will work on this right now. Maybe I will vent about my day in the process.

  5. Hey Angela,

I can’t really tell you a definitive answer because I wasn’t given one. I can tell you for certain why I wasn’t fired – it wasn’t due to immorality or heresy. Mainly I think it was due to me not being a good fit with the Senior Pastor. It was my first full-time youth pastorate, and it was certainly a wake-up call for me to certain realities within the church.

The next church that hired me determined that my firing was baseless and was handled inappropriately and unbiblically. I had only been there 9 months. That was 1996, since then they’ve gone through 3-4 youth pastors. I had a chance to connect with one and it seems like there was issues with the Senior Pastor (the same one).

Basically, he was a control freak and had unrealistic expectations for the position. It almost knocked me out of ministry for good, but God used that time in my life for growth and for good. For that I thank Him.

  6. Melody says:

Done…and it was actually harder than I thought….lol, I revealed so little, yet it made me feel like I uncovered the dumbest things ever about myself. Thanks for the challenge…And are you a Pastor now, or what? (Your blog is slightly confusing to navigate through and I haven’t quite figured it out yet.)

  7. Hey Melody, I am an enigma ;) . No I work full-time for a ministry called Serve Our Youth Network – http://www.serveouryouth.org – that ministry serves high-risk children and youth, and I am the Director of Ministries & Volunteer Development. Which basically means I oversee our volunteer training. I oversee our chaplaincy ministry in three different juvenile facilities, and I am responsible for volunteer/mentor recruitment in the Des Moines Metro area, plus whatever else my executive director asks me to do.

I also serve Grace Evangelical Free Church in Indianola – http://graceindianola.org – part-time as their interim pastor. So basically I just preach for them.

Before Serve Our Youth I served as a youth pastor in three different churches.

I hope that clears up my biography a little bit.

If you have suggestions for how to organize the blog better I’m all ears.

I would strongly disagree with your item #6 – that you are the better looking one that is! You should have let me write this one for you. I could have came up with much more interesting facts and tidbits!!!

  9. Hey, don’t listen to Scott – he is just diluted with jealousy.

Scott, I’d have you write it, but I have a reputation to maintain :) .

  10. Bill Kinnon says:

Toronto had a heat wave. Really. That’s incredible. You must have been here in late June, all of July or most of August when heat wave’s are the norm. Ya need to travel a touch more my friend. :-)

  11. I completely agree with you Bill. Here I thought you guys slept in igloos and stuff, boy was I blown away! LOL. I didn’t expect it to be hotter than where I was coming from. I knew it wasn’t going to be cold.

I do need to get out more.
