Only Three GOP Governors Not At Trough

It seems that only three GOP governors are not stepping up to the Obama feeding trough.

  • Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska
  • Governor Mark Sanford of South Carolina
  • Governor Rick Perry of Texas

I’m disappointed that Governor Bobby Jindal of Louisiana is not on the list, but for now these seem to be the only governors who want to actually govern like fiscal conservatives.

  • I’d like to say Perry would never go to the trough, but the truth is that Texas has been running a nice surplus which Austin has had the sense to save for a rainy day. Plus, our economy hasn’t taken anywhere near the hit other areas have.

  • Perhaps he’ll surprise you ;) .

I’d cut Jindal some slack based on hurricane recovery and an economic base that hasn’t fully recovered, but they’ve already received a lot of federal dollars.

  • Disappointing.. I have been thinking about this whole idea of “pork” in federal legislation.. why should the federal government meddle in state’s affairs? A troubling trend that has been going on for a long time.. maybe Jindal has just bought into the trend?

  • Could be. He’s in a real tough position though. It would be very hard to govern as a fiscal conservative there.

I think the less the federal government is involved in state affairs the better, which I believe was the intention of the founding fathers.

  • Those three may be the only ones who wish to be fiscal conservatives for now… Palin wants to be the Anti-Obama for now… Perry's state was the only big one to vote against Obama, and Texans in general laugh at him. Sanford, I don't know…

I think everyone wants to spend money right now for fear of looking like they are not compassionate. Nobody wants that label. I agree with your premise though, throwing money at a problem rarely solves it.

  • Palin, I think has been pretty charitable with Obama since the election. She was criticized for not requesting more federal dollars. She has governed as a fiscal conservative the past couple of years, and seems like she is going to continue. Had a chance to listen to her State of the State address and was pretty impressed.

I didn't realize Perry was that unpopular in Texas. I don't know much about Sanford either.

I'm cutting Jindal some slack though, he's got some extraordinary challenges in Louisiana right now with a diminished tax base and an economy that hasn't fully recovered. Not to mention cleaning up the mess the previous administration left for him.
