CNSNews.com reported that Georgetown University covered over the Name of Jesus to comply with a White House request for the speech that President Obama gave there on Tuesday.

Georgetown University says it covered over the monogram “IHS”–symbolizing the name of Jesus Christ—because it was inscribed on a pediment on the stage where President Obama spoke at the university on Tuesday and the White House had asked Georgetown to cover up all signs and symbols there.

Also I didn’t mention it yesterday when he brought up the Sermon on the Mount, he didn’t bring up Jesus either.

So what say you… should the White House have asked them to “cover up”?  Is that appropriate to do?  He was after all their guest.

  1. I'm no longer surprised at the things the president does…he's one person who would not be welcome as a guest in my home, as I would not cover up my Christian symbols and signs.

  2. He was there guest, but a guests should respect their hosts as well. It seems like this was in place for some time and I do not think it should be covered up. It is clearly not saying nor depicting anything offensive to anyone of different beliefs.

If this is their position, I hope it is applied consistently in all cases for all religions.

  3. My first thought was that Obama did not want to be represented as a symbol of Christ, but I am giving him way more credit than is due.

  4. I realize this is a contrarian view, but I am relieved that IHS was covered for a political event. I don't want the symbol for Christ to be in any way 'exploited' or 'co-opted' for political gain. I don't think it appropriate for any religious symbols to be displayed prominently behind any US President's head. Not just out of respect for any other faith, but out of respect for THAT faith. We will see if this is a trend continued by Obama in regard to all religious symbols, or whether or not this was a political decision meant to cherry-pick Christian symbols only.

  5. If he's consistent. The Obama administration is now saying they only requested the backdrop, not that they cover “IHS.” The official at Georgetown says that isn't the case. Hmmmm…

I understand what you are saying though. There is a way for religious symbols to not be displayed behind the President – don't speak at religious facilities.

He unfortunately co-opted the Scriptures during his speech – http://caffeinatedthoughts.com/?p=2531.
