I don’t want to read too much into this because I know I’ve had some (actually a lot) of unflattering pictures taken of me.  This picture is priceless though.

I’m just wondering what First Lady Michelle Obama was thinking when she was looking at the First Lady of France, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, at the ceremony marking the 65th anniversary of the D-Day Invasion at Normandy.

  1. I'm not clever with coming up with captions, but you do have to wonder what the heck she is thinking, huh? It doesn't look like a very happy look though!

  2. We don't know what she was thinking. It could have been indigestion after eating French food.

  3. Well, it was a very serious event. I might have looked something like this all day long no matter who I was sitting next to. If she were gleeful, I'd be uncomfortable about it.

  4. Shane, yes, similar picture of Gov. Palin in your April post, but that one you posted in the context of a positive story. All good fun, I know. But the FLOTUS picture seems to be posted solely for the effect of the facial expression. It's not a big deal, folks are going to think what they think regardless of a look for which we can't know the context. But I still don't see the point except to reinforce negative perception based on something that lacks substance. Based on the comments on your Facebook moreso than here, it inspired a few critical remarks based solely on conjecture about her personality. Just my two cents. But I sure like it better when you provide your quality news updates and commentary on policy, events, etc. Leave this stuff for a lesser man to wallow in. 🙂

  5. I certainly didn't put this up with the intent to be mean-spirited, and unfortunately the person who criticized me on Facebook made not attempt to defend Palin and/or Bush when they were legitimately being ridiculed. I don't believe this is in the same vein.

I do appreciate your feedback (especially with the Pelosi picture where I was out-of-line).

  6. My first thought is:
Holy crow, what the HECK did Sarkozy's wife DO? Is she feeling defensive for the uninvited Queen? (who is a vet, after all…)

Looking more closely, I wonder who was behind them making noise– assume a slight telephoto lens, and Mrs. Obama is looking *behind* them.

  7. Thanks Shane. Easier for me to comment after it's up than for you to guess how it will be perceived before you post it. I think that's maybe the crux of it — your intent was good natured fun (because yes, the photo is classic) but in such a polarized environment, folks jump on the chance to take another swipe.

  8. Bet she just realized Ms. Bruni-Sarkozy and she are wearing the same pair of ultra-cool trend-setting shoes. I've seen other women give that look over less…. 😉

  9. It is amazing what angles and lenses can do. You are probably right, but seeing some other pictures of the same event there are pictures where she looks even more ticked off (if that is possible).

  10. I guess she could be one of those folks who defaults to the “pissed off” expression…or something else might be under her skin.

I've read that she's pretty radical in her views; she might object to what is being celebrated, in some form.
