Interesting video from The Cato Institute:

It makes me wonder if we know the true cost of education in the Des Moines Public Schools.  You can read Cato’s paper on this subject below:

  1. I’m still waiting for someone in a teacher’s union to explain to me how the Amish can educate their kids for $100/year (give or take) and somehow out-perform public school-educated kids that cost thousands upon thousands to educate, through the 8th grade..

      1. @Guy Incognito,

There’s more out there, but this article culls some of the barebone facts from the book by Hostetler mentioned in the refs. (Sorry, no online link–you’ll have to buy a copy.)

Basically, their kids out-perform public schools kids at the eight grade level in every area except vocabulary, and they do it for peanuts. (The number is usually reported as $100/year, but it, of course, varies.)

The humiliating fact is that if the Amish were even close to (never mind beating) their public school counterparts, that would be something else given how little they shell out for it, thus putting the lie to the nonsense that we have to keep increasing education spending beyond the ridiculous sums already lavished on it.
