Council Bluffs, Iowa – September 10, 2010 – On September 1, 2010 the Iowa Secretary of State was sent a letter informing him that seven Iowa counties may have more registered voters than citizens of voting age. The Election Law Center based out of McLean, Virginia stated in its letter to the Secretary of State that “Federal law requires Iowa to conduct a reasonable effort to maintain voter registration lists free from dead voters, ineligible felon voters and voters who have moved away.”

The Election Law Center bases its allegations from a published report by the Election Assistance Commission from June 20, 2009 entitled the “Impact of the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 on the Administration of Elections for Federal Office 2007-2008.”

“The EAC Report details problematic data for Iowa. Multiple counties in Iowa have more registered voters than citizens of voting age. The counties are: Fremont, Adams, Lyon, Jefferson, Audubon, Chickasaw, and Kossuth,” stated J. Christian Adams in his letter.

“It is important to realize that at this point these are only allegations but if any of them are true, it is an example of where the Secretary of State needs to do more to set up quality controls to prevent potential voter fraud. You can’t blame the County Auditors in this situation. They have a lot of different responsibilities with limited resources. The County Auditors cannot be expected to catch these kinds of problems every time,” said Matt Schultz, the Republican nominee for Secretary of State.

Schultz further stated, “As Chief Elections Officer in Iowa, the Secretary of State should be showing leadership and helping the County Auditors in resolving these kinds of issues. It should not take an outsider threatening litigation to correct this problem.”

Matt Schultz was first elected to the Council Bluffs City Council in 2005 and is in his second term. Matt Schultz won the Republican nomination for Secretary of State in a three way primary in June. He is a graduate of Creighton Law School and the University of Iowa. Matt is married with three children and is an Attorney at the law firm of Schultz & Watson, LLP.
