In today’s Des Moines Register were a couple of letters in the opinion section that made my eyes roll.

The first was by a man who rightly said that concealed carry was frowned upon in days past in America because people felt they had a right to know who was armed.  Sounds reasonable.

He then proceeds to say that Iowans should only be allowed to carry weapons if they are carried openly.  Clever.  The writer, however, must know that the only reason concealed carry has become the prominent form of carry is not because gun owners are shady and ashamed but because rational thought has been replaced by emotional anti-gun propaganda – driving my exercise of rights to be concealed instead of proudly demonstrated in public.  Citizens are not exposed to firearms as children anymore, causing fear due to ignorance and political correctness.

The second piece, found here, is from “Joan” in Pella, Iowa who asks the question:  “When does one person’s right to bear arms infringe on another person’s right to feel safe?”

The answer: never.  You don’t have a right to FEEL safe.  “Feeling” is subjective.  No one’s rights, liberties, or privileges should be hinged on how you or I “feel.”  An objective look at the Constitution and a pragmatic look at statistics combined with common sense points not only to the asinine nature of gun control legislation, but exposes citizens like “Joan” in Pella as ignorant…at best.

Have another Dutch Letter and buck-up, Joan.  We are here to stay.
