Washington, D.C. – Today, the Susan B. Anthony List praised Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann for her groundbreaking pro-life leadership following her announcement that she will drop out of the 2012 presidential race.  Bachmann was one of the five top candidates to sign the Susan B. Anthony List Pro-life Presidential Leadership Pledge and has been a heroic pro-life leader.

“We are sad to see such a strong leader leave the race, but know that her pro-life leadership is desperately needed in Congress,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “Michele Bachmann has been an unwavering advocate for protecting women and the unborn.  Not only has she committed to defunding Planned Parenthood of its nearly half a billion in annual taxpayer funds, her commitment to protecting life has been a foundation of her presidential campaign.  We look forward to her continued leadership in the House.”

In 2010, Rep. Bachmann won the SBA List 2010 Distinguished Leader Award for her consistent advocacy for unborn children and women in Congress. Last year, she voted against all short-term Continuing Resolutions to fund the government because they included funding for the pro-abortion health care law and also failed to defund Planned Parenthood of the now more than $487 million in taxpayer dollars it receives per year.

“Michele Bachmann is a strong, authentic pro-life, pro-woman champion in the mold of Susan B. Anthony – not only does she lead by example, but her perseverance in defending women from the tragedy of abortion is an invaluable asset to the pro-life cause,” said Dannenfelser. “She understands that the rights of women and their children are inextricably linked.”

Michele and her husband Marcus, have five children and have also served as foster parents to over 23 at-risk teens, which has inspired Congresswoman Bachmann to become one of Congress’ leading advocates for foster and adopted children, earning her bipartisan praise for her efforts.

The Susan B. Anthony List is a nationwide network of more than 330,000 Americans dedicated to mobilizing, advancing, and representing pro-life women in politics.  Its connected Candidate Fund increases the percentage of pro-life women in the political process.
