bruce-braley-1Via NRSC: On Tuesday President Obama announced that he would bypass Congress to implement a radical climate change plan that many are calling a “War on Coal.”  We call it a “War on the Middle Class” and a “War on Jobs” for our already weak economy.

For years, Bruce Braley has supported President Obama’s radical agenda. Braley’s loyalty didn’t waiver when Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid attacked the coal industry – seemingly unaware that it provides 67% of the electricity production in Iowa. Braley is responsible for the radical liberal policy agenda that will destroy jobs, raise energy costs, and hurt working families in states like Iowa.

Over the last five years President Obama and Washington Democrats have made no secret about their “War on Coal”

  • BARACK OBAMA: “Under my plan of a cap-and-trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket. … Coal-powered plants, you know, natural gas, you name it, whatever the plants were, whatever the industry was, they would have to retrofit their operations. That will cost money. They will pass that money on to consumers.” (Sen. Barack Obama, Interview With The San Francisco Chronicle’s Editorial Board, San Francisco Chronicle, 1/17/08)
  • HARRY REID: “We talk about cost competitiveness, but the one thing we fail to talk about is those costs that you don’t see on the bottom line. That is coal makes us sick. Oil makes us sick. It’s global warming. It’s ruining our country. It’s ruining our world.” (Fox Business Network, 6/30/08)
  • JOE BIDEN: “No coal plants here in America. “Build ‘em, if they’re gonna build ‘em, over there and make ‘em clean because they’re killing ya.” (Joe Biden, Campaign Event, Maumee, OH, 9/17/08)

Yet Bruce Braley worked hard to elect President Obama and the accompanying agenda.

“Bruce Braley can’t have his cake and eat it too,” said NRSC Press Secretary Brook Hougesen.  “Protecting the environment and developing an energy policy for the 21st century is a common-sense conservative and balanced approach. Instead of working together, Braley prefers to raise the cost of electricity to unaffordable levels to appease radical liberal environmentalists. Braley worked to ensure that Democrats could wage a “War on Coal,” that will hurt agriculture destroy jobs in Iowa, raise costs for middle class families, and drown small businesses with red tape.  Radically empowering the EPA to hurt energy development is too extreme for Iowa.”
