NC_LegislatureWashington, D.C – Today, the national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) praised the North Carolina legislature for passing the Safe Harbor for Victims of Sex Trafficking bill (SB 683) and the Health and Safety Changes Act (SB 353). The legislation addresses minors who are victims of sex-trafficking, requires abortion facilities to meet increased health and safety standards, bans sex-selective abortion, and protects the conscience rights of health care workers who object to participating in abortion.

“In the aftermath of Kermit Gosnell and other abortion clinic horrors, we commend the North Carolina legislature for taking action to protect women,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser.  “In the last year, an abortion clinic in Charlotte was labeled ‘an imminent threat to the health and safety of patients’ after the health department found dead insects, blood splatters and dirty surgical instruments inside.

“North Carolina women deserve better. We applaud the state representatives, including women like Reps. Ruth Samuelson and Jacquelyn Schaffer. They stand for the dignity and safety of all women, not the profit-driven abortion industry. This victory could not have happened without the bold leadership of these pro-life legislators and groups like North Carolina Values Coalition and North Carolina Right to Life.”

“SB 353 protects the health and safety of women by implementing common-sense and reasonable safety standards for abortion facilities and also outlaws sex-selective abortion. This lethal sex-discrimination is usually used to end the lives of girl children because they are considered the ‘wrong’ sex,” said Tami Fitzgerald, Executive Director of the NC Values Coalition. “It is refreshing to work with a state legislative body that values life and wants to protect women and the unborn. We appreciate the legislature’s work in passing these important life-preserving measures and urge the Governor to sign these bills as soon as possible.”

The SBA List has compiled an ever-expanding fact sheet on abortion industry negligence and brutality occurring nationwide.
