U.S. Rep. Bob Latta of Ohio

WASHINGTON – On Thursday, U.S. Rep. Bob Latta, R-Ohio, introduced the Support and Value Expectant (SAVE) Moms & Babies Act to prevent approval of new abortion drugs by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), prevent the loosening of FDA regulation of already-approved abortion drugs, and prevent abortion drugs from being dispensed remotely by mail or through telemedicine.

The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) is encouraging members of Congress to co-sponsor the bill.

“We thank Congressman Latta for leading the charge to stop the proliferation of so-called medication abortion,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “The abortion lobby’s attempts to interfere with protective FDA regulations and flood the U.S. market with dangerous abortion drugs from overseas through groups like Aid Access underscores their disregard for women’s health and safety, and the urgency of this legislation. We strongly support the SAVE Moms & Babies Act and implore Congress to pass it without delay.”

Commenting on a new Guttmacher Institute report released yesterday, which shows an increase in chemical abortion while the overall abortion rate and total number of abortions has decreased, Chuck Donovan, president of SBA List’s research arm Charlotte Lozier Institute (CLI), said:

The rise in so-called medication abortion should concern us all as it reveals the abortion industry’s increasingly successful effort to cut the overhead costs of surgical abortion while still profiting off the destruction of unborn children and wounding of his or her mother, who is given dangerous abortion drugs and then sent off to pass the body of her aborted child in isolation. The industry’s migration to chemical self-abortion is deeply disturbing as it carries with it the possibility of increasing the overall abortion rate over time and also carries with it a higher rate of injury, about which women are often under informed or deceived.

CLI experts have previously criticized flawed research purporting to show that self-administered, self-reported chemical abortions are not dangerous to women.

AbortionDrugFacts.com, a new website developed with input from CLI’s team of experts and pro-life partners, aims to give women the information they need to protect their health and safety before they go through a chemical abortion, to have a second chance to change their mind after initiating one or to recover from the trauma they may already have experienced as a result of taking abortion drugs. In addition, the site provides women who have been hurt by the abortion pill an opportunity to share their story and/or make a confidential report to the FDA.
