Minnesota House to Vote on Bachmann Proposal

Washington, DC—Today, American Principles in Action urged former Minnesota Governor and presidential candidate Tim Pawlenty to publicly support the state’s constitutional amendment defining marriage as between a man and a woman, which is up for a vote in the Minnesota House of Representatives tomorrow. Originally proposed eight years ago by Rep. Michele Bachmann when she was in the Minnesota Senate, the amendment passed that body 38-27 last week. If approved, the amendment would be added as a voter referendum on the 2012 ballot.

“Courts in states across the country are overturning laws defining marriage as between a man and a woman, but this amendment will ensure Minnesotans have a chance to protect marriage from activist judges,” said Frank Cannon, president of American Principles in Action. “We urge Gov. Pawlenty to support the amendment proposed by marriage champion Rep. Bachmann and urge the state House to do the same.”

Last Wednesday, Rep. Bachmann stated on her twitter account: “As a MN state senator I introduced a constitutional marriage amendment; 8 years later it’s finally coming up for a vote.”

“Gov. Pawlenty’s credibility as a social conservative is at stake as he continues to vie for the Republican nomination for president,” said Cannon. “Republican voters across the country will take note of whether or not he is a leader for marriage in his home state.”

Gov. Pawlenty has previously stated that traditional values such as marriage between a man and a woman are “universal” and are “embedded in our culture.”
