al-qaeda-militantsMichael Hirsh blogging about an article he wrote for National Journal wrote:

"The war on terror is over," one senior State Department official who works on Mideast issues told me. "Now that we have killed most of al Qaida, now that people have come to see legitimate means of expression, people who once might have gone into al Qaida see an opportunity for a legitimate Islamism."

Really?  Whew!

Seriously, just because Al Qaida has been diminished doesn’t mean other groups won’t step up to take their place.  I understand that tactics will change and the “frontlines” so to speak will change, but to declare it over?

Just a tad premature don’t you think?  It seems to be the type of complacency that a terrorist organization would want us to fall into.  Which is something we’ve seen in the Obama Administration’s inability to use the term so this view by the State Department official is hardly a surprise.  But evidently our “victory,” according to the National Journal is due to “Obama’s savagely successful military drone campaign against the worst of the violent jihadists, al Qaida.”
