C S Lewis started his book, “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” with this sentence:

“There was a boy called Eustace Clarence Scrubb, and he almost deserved it.”

Scrubb was an evil kid, brimming with all kinds of mischief and mayhem. At one point in the books, Scrubb goes into a cave alone. After some awful noise, the brave, protagonist children follow him into the cave, only to discover a fierce dragon was hovering over what was left of Scrubb, a few of his torn up clothes. They feared the worst.  He had been eaten by the dragon.  It turns out to be much worse than they had thought. Eustace had not been eaten by the dragon, but he had become the dragon.*

Over the last few months, I have become fearful and frankly disgusted with politics. I see politicians and their lackeys exaggerate their own accomplishments while minimizing those of their opponents. I have seen them become particularly disdainful of President Obama.  And I have received many fund-raising appeals with dubious claims.

This is the beast of politics I’ve grown to hate. But, it is also the beast I have become. This week I wrote an article calling Ted Cruz “pro-choice”, because I didn’t dig enough to get to the truth.  What I said then, was not the truth, and it libeled a brother for whom Christ died. Ted Cruz is pro-life.

I earlier had thought about staying out of the current battles in politics, and I should have done so. My brand of politics is not needed. It hurts more than it helps. I truly wish Ted Cruz all the best. And Shane, you too.
