Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump responded to the shooting death of two Iowa police officers early Wednesday morning. Urbandale Police Officer Justin Martin and Des Moines Police Sgt. Anthony Beminio were both ambushed while sitting in their squad cars. The suspect, Scott Michael Green, was apprehended seven hours later.

Trump during a campaign rally said that “an attack on our police is an attack on all of us.”

Transcript:

A terrible tragedy today has occurred in Iowa, you read, you saw. Early this morning two Iowa police officers, outstanding, outstanding people, were murdered, ambushed violently while sitting in their squad cars. We send our thoughts and prayers to the families and the fallen.

I just left Iowa, a most beautiful place, the treatment was so incredible – the crowds, the police officers were so incredible, the job they did, now two of them are dead. An attack on our police is an attack on all of us. Law enforcement is the line separating civilization from total chaos, you have to remember that.

According to the National Law Enforcement Officers’ Memorial Fund firearm-related police deaths are up 48 percent this year, the highest they’ve ever been, and there have been 14 ambush-style attacks this year alone – never had anything like this. What it is – is a lack of respect for our nation, a lack of respect for our leadership. To all the great men and women of law enforcement I want you to know we are with you, we support you, and we will stand by you.
