Three conservative groups called on President Donald Trump to nominate Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court of the United States replacing the retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy.
Barrett was confirmed earlier this year to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit. American Family Association, American Principles Project, and Judicial Action Group endorsed Barrett and sent a letter to the President urging him to nominate Barrett.
The groups thanked him for nominating Justice Neil Gorsuch. “His record thus far is a great indicator that he will be a blessing to this nation and to your legacy for decades to come,” they wrote.
“(W)e prayerfully, strongly, and humbly implore you to select the nominee with a demonstrably constitutional judicial philosophy and a verifiably strong will against political pressure,” they said.
“It is our conviction that the best nominee on your list of 25 prospects is Judge Amy Coney Barrett.”
They provided the President with eight reasons why they believe Barrett would be the best choice:
- Judge Barrett is not a Stealth Nominee
- Judge Barrett has a Constitutionalist Judicial Philosophy
- Judge Barrett has a Prestigious Resume
- Judge Barrett has more Judicial Experience than Elena Kagan
- Judge Barrett is Tested
- Judge Barrett is Confirmable
- Judge Barrett has a Compelling Personal Story that Pre-empts the Liberal Playbook
- Judge Barrett Represents a Known Quantity
“President Trump, you have the historic opportunity to reverse a 50-year trend and bring a constitutional renaissance to the Supreme Court, the entire federal judiciary and, hence, the Nation. No president has ever accomplished this feat. Accordingly, your nomination of the next Supreme Court Justice may be the most important decision of your presidency and will define your legacy for generations to come,” they appealed.
“For the above reasons, it is our firm conviction that Judge Amy Coney Barrett is the best Supreme Court nominee for this defining moment in history, and we commend you for placing her on your list of prospects. Therefore, we respectfully and unreservedly recommend that you nominate her to the United States Supreme Court,” they concluded.
BarrettĀ is a graduate of Rhodes College and Notre Dame Law School. Before serving on the bench, Barrett was a law professor at the University of Notre Dame where she still teaches. She also taught briefly at George Washington University and the University of Virginia. Barrett clerked for Judge Laurence Silberman on the D.C. Circuit and then the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia after graduating from law school. She also has experience in private practice atĀ Miller, Cassidy, Larroca & Lewin in Washington, D.C. where she was part of the team who represented George W. Bush in Bush v. Gore.
She has been published in numerous law reviews for various topics including originalism, federal court jurisdiction, and the supervisory power of the Supreme Court. She also served six years on theĀ Advisory Committee for the Federal Rules of Appellate Procedure after Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts appointed her in 2010.
