The city of Laodicea was one of the most prominent and powerful cities in the region, but they had one problem; they had no water. Unlike the surrounding cities who had hot springs and cool rivers, Laodicea had lukewarm water that was unsuitable for drinking. In his love for them, Jesus tells them not to be like their city, self-reliant, ineffective and complacent, but to come to him for the things that truly matter, pure clothing, healing salve, and a place with him for eternity. We too are susceptible to the rhythms and reputation of our city, and with the Laodiceans, we are invited to come and take on the name, the zeal, and the love of Christ.
