John Stossel, Libertarian that he is, has been asking some interesting questions lately with regard to the legalization of things like prostitution and drugs. As I recall, the subject of polygamy has also been raised and Stossel has no problem with that either.

Here’s a video of Stossel discussing some of these issues on Fox News:

Please don’t misunderstand. As much as I love Stossel, I am not in favor of what he suggests. The question I have is this: In our nation where evolution is taught as fact (and thus theism is usually dismissed as laughable) and where pluralism is essentially codified in the Establishment Clause, on what principled grounds can anyone object to things like prostitution or polygamy? Sure, practical arguments may be made against them, but that’s not why they have been prohibited in our nation. They have been prohibited on moral grounds for generations and these moral grounds came from our Christian consensus, which looked to the Word of God for its moral direction.

But the consensus is gone, pluralism is our established religion, and a consistent secularism would support Stossel’s claim that we simply ought to legalize these things. Only recapturing the Christian consensus will ensure that there will be Scriptural principles applied to law. Better yet, by the grace of God, let’s recapture the consensus and modify the First Amendment to acknowledge Him.
