r.robert From the Rod Roberts for Governor Campaign:

Republican gubernatorial candidate State Representative Rod Roberts today announced that he will cut personal income taxes by 10% during his first term as Governor. Roberts said that when combined with his plan to eliminate the corporate income tax, slashing the personal income tax by 10% will rejuvenate Iowa’s sluggish economy, provide new jobs, and strengthen Iowa’s families and communities.

“As April 15 nears, Iowans are feeling the burden of the state and federal governments now more than ever. We need to get government off the backs of Iowa taxpayers. Cutting Iowa’s personal income tax is about creating jobs and stimulating the economy, but it’s also about showing respect for Iowa taxpayers,” said Roberts, who will address a Tea Party rally in Spencer on Thursday.

Roberts pointed out that his cut to the personal income tax will benefit middle-class families in particular. An individual with a taxable income of $50,000 will save roughly $400 per year as a result of Roberts’s 10% cut to the personal income tax.

Roberts further noted that his plans to cut corporate and personal income taxes will allow him to be the first Governor in years to reduce the size of state government. This is because Roberts has vowed to abide by a limitation that prohibits state government from spending more than 99% of projected revenue. Since Roberts’s tax reform plans will result in less revenue for the state, the 99% spending limitation will require state government to spend fewer taxpayer dollars, too.

“It has been a long time since Iowa had a limited-government, conservative Governor, but I will be that kind of leader for this state,” said Roberts, a five-term State Representative from Carroll. “Keeping taxes low rewards hard work, limits the size of government, and shows respect for Iowa workers.”

Over the past 10 years, Roberts has developed a lengthy voting record of fighting for lower taxes. He has never voted to increase personal income taxes, and he has consistently helped block tax increases.

“For 10 years I have served as an advocate for Iowa taxpayers as a State Representative. I know how to cut taxes and I know how to block tax increases. As Governor, I will again be a reliable advocate for Iowa taxpayers,” said Roberts.
