DES MOINES – Iowa For Freedom State Chairman Bob Vander Plaats reacted Wednesday to last night’s campaign speech by Iowa Supreme Court Chief Justice Marsha Ternus.

“It is incredible to think that a sitting Supreme Court member would be so aggressive in an attack against average citizens,” Vander Plaats said referring to the chief justice’s 45-minute campaign speech Tuesday in Ames in which she assailed those who support voting “NO” on the Supreme Court judicial retention election.

At one point in her stump speech the Chief Justice directly addressed the activities of a local Church. “For a sitting Supreme Court justice to lash out at people by name and even to go after local clergy shows she does not have the proper judicial temperament,” Vander Plaats said. “It is clear that she is hostile to the voter participation part of the Iowa Judicial system.”

Vander Plaats said Nov. 2 is the moment voters across the state have been waiting for to re-establish the relationship between the citizens and government. Iowa For Freedom asks Iowans to stop judicial activism, hold the Iowa Supreme Court in check and vote no on three Iowa Supreme Court justices up for retention.

“Iowa For Freedom is asking Iowans to vote no on Nov. 2,” Vander Plaats said. “Iowans are looking forward to Nov. 2, and what Article 1, Section 2 of the Iowa Constitution provides them, ‘that all power is inherent in the people’ and not a hostile chief justice and an activist Supreme Court.”
