Former Gov. Ted Strickland (D-OH)

The Democratic Party found God again… kind of anyway.

After a lot of pushback Democratic leaders added God and a statement that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel back into their platform after they were both omitted.  Former Governor Ted Strickland (D-OH) discussed God and moved for the convention delegates to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.  He said:

This summer, I was proud to serve this party as the platform drafting committee chair. I came before you today to discuss the two important matters related to our party’s national platform. As an ordained United Methodist Minister, I am here to attest and affirm that our faith and belief in God is central to the American story and informs the value we have expressed in our party’s platform. In addition, President Obama recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and our party’s platform should as well. Mr. Chairman, I have submitted my amendment in writing and I believe it is being projected on the screen for the delegates to see. I move adoption of the amendment as submitted and shown to the delegates.

Abortion and gay marriage is evidence of the Democratic Party’s collective faith and belief in God?  Also when has President Obama recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital?  Wow, but I digress.

As you can hear in the video below that the delegates booed after Governor Strickland spoke.  The convention chairman, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa had to ask for a voice vote three times before the motion passed.

Or did it pass?  Reminiscent of voice vote taken last week at the Republican National Convention on the rules when you listen it’s pretty clear that the motion did not pass with the required 2/3 majority vote.

The amendment and the steamrolling by Mayor Villaraigosa was then booed.
