Some time ago I wrote a series of articles highly critical of a well known allegedly Christian radio broadcaster, a man who had predicted the date of the return of Christ and the subsequent end of the world. I said the man wasn’t a Christian. I said he was a delusional fruitcake. One reader in particular was really upset with my remarks. How dare I judge this man, she asked. After all, I can’t know his heart. Only God can. But the Bible is clear in Matthew 7: verse 15-20 that we are to judge a tree by its fruit. No one is a Christian simply because he says that he is. And it’s not about knowing the secrets of someone’s heart. It is about what they say and do. And it is about judging what they say and do with righteous judgment.
