Dr. Christopher Peters

Christopher Peters, who was the Republican challenger to Congressman Dave Loebsack (D-Iowa) in Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District in 2016 is poised to announce his intentions to challenge him once again.

Peters lost to Loebsack 53.7 percent to 46.2 percent in the 2016 election. Loebsack who has seen his margin of victory shrink over the past two election cycles defeated Peters by less than 28,000 in a district when, at the time, Democrats held a voter registration edge over Republicans just over 25,000. Since the election, both parties lost some registered voters, but Democrats currently now just hold a voter registration advantage of 20,669.

Currently, no other Republican has announced intentions to run in the primary. Daniel Clark, a former Bernie Sanders delegate, is running an independent campaign to the left of Loebsack.

Peters, a U.S. Army veteran, practicing surgeon, and small business owner in Coralville plans to visit all 24 counties in the district next week on his announcement tour.

“I have continued traveling the 2nd District since last November and I’ve seen that Iowans are as frustrated as ever with their federal government. Neither the Democrats nor the Republicans in Washington D.C. have put forth practical ideas to address our most pressing issues. The people I’ve met want an independent-minded representative in Congress,” Peters said in a released statement.
