As the proceedings for the confirmation of U.S. Supreme Court Justice nominee Brett Kavanaugh began Tuesday, the outrage circus turned out in droves, ready to disrupt, tie up, and generally ruin the process as much as possible.
The most prominent disruption came from Democratic committee members, and very few responses to the nonsense were as succinct and wonderful as U.S. Senator Chuck Grassleyās (R-Iowa).
As the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Grassley welcomed everyone to the confirmation hearing. However, he was only 13 words in before U.S. Senator Kamala Harris (D-California) decided that it was prime time to interrupt.
Hereās how the situation played out, as transcribed by Real Clear Politics:
GRASSLEY: Good morning. I welcome everyone to this confirmation hearing on the nomination of…
HARRIS: Mr. Chairman…
GRASSLEY: … Judge Brett Kavanaugh…
HARRIS: Mr. Chairman…
GRASSLEY: … to serve as associate justice…
HARRIS: Mr. Chairman, I’d like to be recognized for…
GRASSLEY: … of the Supreme Court of the United States.
HARRIS: … a question before we proceed.
(UNKNOWN): Regular order, Mr. Chairman.
HARRIS: Mr. Chairman, I’d like to be recognized to ask a question before we proceed. The committee received just last night, less than 15 hours ago…
(UNKNOWN): Mr. Chairman, regular order.
HARRIS: … 42,000 pages of documents that we have not had an opportunity to review or read or analyze.
GRASSLEY: You are out — you’re out of order. I’ll proceed.
HARRIS: We cannot possibly move forward, Mr. Chairman, with this hearing.
This exchange quickly dissolved into a ruckus as the Democrats on the committee called for the hearing to be adjourned. Yet, Grassley held his ground
WATCH:
Using unarguable facts, Grassley quickly called out the Democratic disruption for what it actually was: grandstanding. In fact, his reaction so brought the integrity of his Democratic colleaguesā motives into question that it was no surprise when U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-Illinois) announced that theirĀ disruption had been planned all along, documents or no documents.
Thank you to Senator Grassley for demonstrating that the steadfast use of facts and wit is the best way to react to a liberal tantrum.
