During a rally in Omaha, NE on Monday Democrat presidential nominee Hillary Clinton promised that her administration would raise taxes on the middle class.

“Trump wants to cut taxes for the super rich. No we aren’t going there my friends. I’m going to tell you right now. We are going to write fairer rules for the middle class and we are going to raise taxes on the middle class,” Clinton said to applause.

In the context of the quote it’s pretty clear that she meant to say “super rich,” but what a Freudian slip and the fact the audience didn’t seem to notice and cheered anyway is pretty amusing.

Her tax plan does not change the income tax brackets for the middle class. According to the Tax Foundation she would raise taxes on those making over $5 million a year.  Her statement in Omaha does ring true however when you consider she plans to cap itemized deductions at a tax value of 28%.

Being self employed I itemize as do many others. That will, in effect, be a tax increase for many people who itemize, and the majority are middle class, not the “super rich.”
