The Des Moines Register is well known as a liberal publication. They may deny that, but it goes beyond their editorial pages. If it were contained there it would be tolerable, but it isn’t. The Register has been pushing a transgender agenda in particular in order to normalize it.

I did a search on their website.

First the word “transgender.”

Des Moines Register - Transgender

Considering transgender persons make up about .03% of the population that is significant coverage.

Now if you do a search on the word “gay.”

Des Moines Register - Search for "Gay"

The LGBT population in Iowa as of 2013 is approximately 2.8% according to Gallup.

If you look up the word “Christian” you’ll find this.

Now you may say… hey wait a minute, there are a lot of articles there. Not really when you take out articles with a person named “Christian,” sports news related to Christian schools, and the letters to the editor which a brief scroll appeared to be mostly negative. There are very few articles written about Christians by Des Moines Register staff.

Most of the Catholic stories are related to sports as well.

Boil this down further. White evangelicals make up approximately 25% of Iowa’s population (frankly I’m not sure why they have to break this down by race since there are black and hispanic evangelicals as well).

When you search “evangelical” this is what you get.

Des Moines Register - Evangelical results

Most of the stories related to evangelicals are about their impact on Republican politics, and most of those stories were written before the Iowa Caucus. If you scroll through the results you’ll also find a lot of irrelevant results.

Part of the the problem isn’t just the Des Moines Register’s liberal bias which clearly exists, but churches and Christians organizations are not that great at media outreach. There is a treasure trove of human interest stories if the Des Moines Register staff would just look for it. They might actually help their hemorrhaging circulation as a result.

For the sake of transparency the Des Moines Register should admit that they are pushing a particular worldview. That would be the ethical thing to do. We at Caffeinated Thoughts make no bones about who we are. It would be great if the Des Moines Register would openly admit their bias.
